S’Klallam Connections Garden

Preserving the link between plants and people by restoring traditional uses, this garden demonstrates the significance of native plants to the Strong People. Still under construction, it features a coniferous woodland filled with edible berries and cedar bark, a seasonal pond providing cat-tail and sweet-grass for weaving, plus a camas prairie for harvesting edible bulbs.

The detail (on right) shows how the S’Klallam harvest cedar bark from living trees without harming the tree. The fiber of the inner bark has multitudes of traditional uses and helped make the western red cedar one of the most important resources of the woodland.
