PHOTOGRAPHY

While visiting Heronswood Garden, you are welcome to take photos or video of the garden and events taking place for personal use with a camera, phone or other mobile device. We would love a tag @heronswoodgrdn on social media. Monopods and tripods allowed on pathways and paved surfaces only (please be courteous of other garden visitors); not on lawns or garden beds. Drones not allowed without prior permission. For your safety and that of all visitors, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Protect the garden by remaining on pathways and grassed areas
  • Avoid taking photographs of garden staff and visitors without their consent
  • Do not disturb or remove plants (dead or alive), plant labels, or containers
  • Do not climb on rocks, walls or trees
  • Keep pathways clear for garden visitors
  • Please observe normal standards of decorum in dress and behavior

Formal/Commerical Photography & Filming

Definitions: Formal photography includes posed family, engagement, prom, graduation, senior photos or the like, taken by family/friends or a professional photographer. Commercial photography includes, but is not limited to, photography within the garden to promote or sell a product or service, photos or films for sale, and photography used for business purposes.

All formal photography must be approved by garden staff at least one week in advance. Drop-ins allowed on a case-by-case basis. Regular admission fees apply for each person. Formal photographs may only be taken in areas that are open to the public during normal garden open hours. A signed photo agreement must be completed if a professional photographer will be used. 

All commercial still or video photography must be approved by garden staff at least one week in advance. A permit is required, and permit approval will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Fees include, but are not limited to, permit fee ($50 per day), still photography ($100 per day), film photography ($250 per day), etc. Fees are refundable (except permit fee) if use is canceled two or more business days before permit date. Attendees at weddings and other private events may take photos/videos for their own use. Formal photography is covered under the private event contract. Please adhere to the above guidelines.

ARTISTS

Visual Artists

Artists wishing to draw or paint onsite must adhere to the same guidelines set for photographers for both personal and formal/commercial use. 

For personal use: Artists only in areas that are open to the public during normal garden open hours. Regular admission fees apply for each person. You may bring a small chair/table on which to work but must avoid obstructing a right of way. Tripods and easels allowed on pathways and paved surfaces only; not on lawns or garden beds. Please check in with Ticket Office staff to let them know you would like to paint in the garden.

For commercial use: Must be approved by garden staff at least one week in advance. A permit is required, and permit approval will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Fees include, but are not limited to, permit fee ($50 per day), drawing/painting ($100 per day), etc. Fees are refundable (except permit fee) if use is canceled two or more business days before permit date. Paints, water, and all other materials must be taken with the artist when leaving.

Performing Artists

Performing artists (theatre/acting, dance, music, etc.), wishing to perform onsite must adhere to the same rules and procedures set for photographers/visual artists for both personal and professional use and are allowed by invitation for an event or on a very restricted basis for other events. Heronswood/Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation assumes no liability during photography/filming. Commercial companies are required to assume all responsibility in acquiring applicable permits, permission, and liability coverage while using Heronswood Garden. Credit in commercial production must be given to Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation - Heronswood Garden as location site.
